In individual counseling the therapist work with the individual to reach resolution with a variety of issues, to relieve distress, solve problems, improve quality of life both emotional and practical. Individual psychotherapy typically consists of face-to-face meetings between the therapist and individual. The first few sessions will be an assessment period where the focus will be on looking at the presenting issue and situation in the context of the individual’s relationships with others and functioning. Treatment will include exploration of alternative ways to deal with the problems identified and/or to provide a renewed focus for pursuing your life goals. The therapist will also teach you skills and provide feedback to facilitate success and resolution to the presenting problems. Meetings are at least once per week, as less frequent meetings tend to be less effective. Typically the approach is in-depth work focusing on the exploration of behavior, thoughts and feelings through talk therapy.
